We pride ourselves on our ability to breathe new life into historical properties.
One of our most captivating projects to date is the renovation of a historic home in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, originally constructed as a schoolhouse in 1836. This distinguished property, steeped in history stood as a testament to the past but was in dire need of restoration. Our mission was to honor its rich legacy while adapting it to meet contemporary needs.
Below, we discuss the story of Martha’s Vineyard and how we were able to perfectly encapsulate our commitment to preserving history while enhancing the functionality of a historic home.
Honoring a Historic Home's Legacy with Thoughtful Design
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Martha's Vineyard, this storied property has witnessed the passage of time and the unfolding of history. The home even hosted the renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass on several occasions. Yet, despite its rich heritage, it had fallen into disrepair, desperately needing both restoration and the additional space that a fourth bedroom could provide.
Respecting the historical essence of this home was a key feature in our restoration process. We aimed to pay tribute to its past while infusing it with contemporary elegance. A standout feature is the striking yellow staircase, a vibrant homage to the homeowner’s father’s cherished yellow Porsche. This personal touch not only adds a burst of color but also connects the home's past to the present in a meaningful way.
Equally significant is the use of red brick throughout the property. This design choice is a nod to the home’s origins as an old schoolhouse, where the basement once housed a glazed brick oven for cooking. These bricks serve as a tangible link to the home’s past.
Making the Most of the Land
One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of this renovation was figuring out exactly how to use the space we had to its full capability. To meet the need for an additional bedroom, we transformed the attic into a cozy and inviting sleeping area. Accessed by a spiral staircase situated in the center of the house, this new bedroom blends functionality with architectural flair.

Preserving Historical Integrity
Our approach to this renovation was guided by a deep respect for the home’s historical integrity. Every architectural choice was carefully considered to ensure that we preserved the home’s original character. Modern amenities and design elements were seamlessly integrated to breathe new life into the structure without compromising historical significance.
Blending the Past and Present
The restored Edgartown property is a testament to our dedication to responsible restoration— a perfect blend of past and present. Historical features and nods to family history coexist with contemporary comforts.
